The Sustainability of Solar Energy and WeGen's Support for the Sustainable Development Goals

Do you know why WeGen was founded? WeGen was established in 2017 to promote solar energy as a tool to fight climate change and to help users cut electricity costs.

WeGen works with various partners in both the private and public sectors towards the collective goal to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and renewable energy services. We support the United Nations’ call for Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), and we support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 7 (Clean and Affordable Energy), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

As a social good company that believes in the SDGs, we seek partnerships with like-minded stakeholders. We work hard to support the development and deployment of sustainable solar energy solutions.

Through its Social Transformation efforts and its ST unit, WeGen continues to develop its own local partnership platform to promote RE and solar energy for different sectors and communities, enhance knowledge, and scale-up the implementation of projects. We link with other players in the private sector as well as with different civil society groups and government agencies in campaigns and activities to promote the use of solar and renewable energy as a way to battle climate change and maximize economic benefits.

WeGen installs solar PV panel systems that will cut energy costs as well as carbon dioxide emissions for its partners and clients. We also want to help create additional income opportunities for households and communities that will use their generated electricity for livelihood purposes.

The Sustainability of Solar

Solar energy is the most sustainable energy on the planet: it comes from the light of the sun. Solar is, without doubt, more sustainable than fossil fuel energy sources that are mined and processed using expensive, often wasteful, and environmentally-damaging processes.

Renewable

Solar energy is a renewable resource, unlike fossil fuels which are finite in supply and are therefore non-renewable. The sun generates far more than enough solar power to meet all the energy needs of the entire planet even considering massive population growth. Making the shift to renewable energy like solar is also very important to fight worsening climate change. Climate change and its most devastating impacts are caused by the massive use of fossil fuels for the world’s manufacturing and production processes and the running of its transportation systems.

Fun fact: a study by the magazine Scientific American found that in 40 minutes the amount of energy contained in the light of the sun that reaches the Earth is equivalent to the amount of electrical energy used on the planet in a year's time.

PV Panels are Non-Polluting

When they are used, fossil fuels cause pollution, while solar energy does not. This is a principle of sustainability: the quality of a fuel source to not generate too much waste and pollution. Solar PV panels do not create noise or smoke or dirt: when installed on rooftops, they just continuously create clean energy that is converted easily to electrical energy.

While it is true that manufacturing the panels and getting rid of them when their usefulness has expired are not 100% sustainable, the advantages and the benefits of using them as a sustainable energy source far outweigh the disadvantages.

With the support of our amazing employees, the ST Team and Marketing have put together a video explaining why we believe in the SDGs and why the SDGs are an important and valuable guide for our operations as a company, and how we implement our different marketing, sales, and advocacy activities.

7. Kailangang abutin ng ating bansa ang mga SDGs na Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Sustainable Cities and Communities, at Affordable and Clean Energy.

9. Isulong din natin ang mga SDG na No Poverty goal, Quality Education goal, Gender Equality goal, at Decent Work and Economic Growth goal para tugunan ang maraming problemang panlipunan ngayon.
