WeGen Powers the Queen of Peace Convent in Quezon City

WeGen Energy’s solar project on the rooftop of the Queen of Peace Convent in Quezon City will soon be activated! The convent is known to be a retirement home for members of religious congregations, specifically the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (ICM).

The convent is managed as the Metro Manila home for the sisters of the ICM which was established in 1897 as the Missionary Canonesses of St. Augustine by the Belgian Mother Marie Louise De Meester (1857-1928). Sr. Meester and her novices arrived in the Philippines in 1910, and started their ministry in the province of Ilocos Sur. In 1915, the ICM sisters moved to Manila to be closer to the supply and travel routes.

The convent sits on an edge of the ICM compound in Sta. Mesa Heights, a lot that is five blocks-wide with frontage on four streets. It faces Banawe Street, while St. Theresa’s College-Quezon City faces D. Tuazon. WeGen’s 57 kWp grid-tie PV system will power the offices and rooms of the convent and ensure lower electricity costs for the building.

With its 190 panels with 310 W each, the system will generate 1,506,117 kWh of electricity in the next 25 years. Based on the convent’s documented consumption behavior, at least 95% of the system’s production or 1,418, 724 kWh will be produced: that’s full maximization! In the meantime, the electricity output of the system has to potential to offset almost 30% of the convent’s electricity consumption which they would have otherwise sourced from the distribution utility at volatile, historically increasing rates.

In financial terms, the system has the potential to generate a potential of P15.7 million worth of electricity in the next 25 years (using current electricity rates). There is also the potential to generate P14.4 million in net savings.

The entire solar production of the system will also be able to mitigate 1,052 metric tons of CO2!

The Queen of Peace convent accommodates up to 60 sisters. The convent has emergency medical facilities for its residents who are admitted on the basis of their state of health and not age. The Convent was named after the Notre Dame de Paix (Our Lady of Peace), a 1500s incarnation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On the ground floor past the entrance hallway are the main reception area, multipurpose room, a wide recreation room, the garden chapel, refectory, kitchen, and infirmary. The first and second floors house the private quarters of the resident sisters. Behind are annexes that house a Wellness Center and even a salon. The energy requirements of the appliances and electrical fixtures in these facilities will soon be powered by solar energy!

WeGen Energy is very glad to have been chosen to build this solar project for the convent and to help the ICM sisters in their own commitment to respond to the call of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home. #
